solchumanza

December 21, 2010

my people,

in my younger more vulnerable years (i.e. high school) we had a “secret solchumanzas,” instead of the more philistine secret santas.

solchumanza includes solstice, chanukkah, christmas and kwanza. i was always glad that the solstice came first in this word mash up.

speaking of les holy-days… have you seen this fascinating entry from merriam webster? they appear to have a new background. (i think i prefer the old one though)

speaking of old… remember this place? i cannot believe max fish is closing. it was seminal in my coming-of-age. the first bar i ever went to as an adolescent lass. snuck in through the pink pony‘s back door as i recall (which i also hear is soon-to-be shuttered.) shame. then again the whole les has become douche bag central if you ask me!

enjoy this for your holiday listening pleasure!

censor dispenser

December 20, 2010

mes amis,

i find these two article a curious pairing. in this american article, beige-wearing washingtonians are up in arms over the censorship of david wojinarowicz’s jesus ant video. what’s the fuss?

in this other article, a well-meaning journalist in qatar believes controversy will stir when museum-goers see nudity in art work. oh man. and i thought the jesus ant video was a little silly…!

just goes to show how it’s all about context, n’est pas?

and speaking of museums, why does the de young in california not allow sketching? tres bizzare.

but enough about the art world. back to moi. i have found out two excellent things today.

1. i will be PRing an event to happen at the brick’s iranian theatre festival in march. cannot wait!

2. i will also be representing an event at columbia, missouri’s independent actors theatre in feb. 2011. more details to come!

in other news, went to the fancy three pianos opening at nytw last night. it was so vip, i nearly passed out from all the importantness! food was scrumptious.

also: got this holiday image from the cats of half straddle.

i must say that while i am disappointed to no longer officially represent the halves, i am glad to have taken part–even a small part–in their coming of age.

ciao for now,

can i get a witness

December 13, 2010

comrads,

saw the delightfully, convolutedly titled i’m going to make a small incision behind your ear to check and see if you’re actually human at the bushwick starr on friday. lord i love that starry space! friendly staff and fine programming…they’ve got good weddings too! still dreaming of those meat pies…

witness relocation, who made the convoluted, yet never diluted(!), incision, is a group i am quite keen on. i much enjoyed their version of  toshiki okada‘s five days in march that i caught this past spring at la mama etc. their latest dance-theatre is a visual extravaganza with–no surprise–attractive youngin actors. when can we get some oldies on the stage? i say!

even though some of incision was pithy and collegiate, (the plot of TV show was annoying in that downtown actor way) good actor honesty games abounded. i liked the blindfolded beat down, as well as the yes/no question dance.  over all they were quite bravi. and i will most certainly catch their next show. and so should you.

other upcoming tid bits i will try to catch include tommy smith’s the wife, and john kelly’s pass the blutwurst, bitte…this among the myriad of holiday soirees i must attend. this year i set a record of hanukkah parties–a whopping four!

that’s all for now…a bien toot!

above us only sky

December 8, 2010

friends,

today i finished reading the internet. j/k! but i am continually overwhelmed by it. and today i  did learn here that experts predict the pool of available internet addresses will be used up in jan 2011. can you believe it?

how very etrange!

and speaking of strange, did you know i went to grade school with julian assange? … more like julian etrange. it was that year i spent in hong kong with my family learning cantonese and running around with pre-teen kids-of-diplomats. julian was quite a little perv even back then! even though he was 11 years my senior, age was very porous in such a setting and time.

anyhoozle, it goes without saying that those wikileaks on muammar al-gaddafi are by far my fave.

i understand one new yorker—one of my clients in fact—has long had sr. gaddafi on the brain for a little play-musical. you didn’t here it hear (har) first! or did you? slated production is not until 2015 and working title is he of the tent.

lastly, the on a more somber note, let us pause and reflect on “imagine.” yes my friends, today is the anniversary of lennon’s untimely death.

ciao for now,
la kippy
